Garden Heights Recovery is Speaking Out for Change in NJ: Substance Abuse Prevention Month

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and one of New Jersey’s leading addiction treatment centers is speaking out to help bring a voice to the millions of New Jersey citizens affected by the opioid epidemic this year. In September, the clinical staff at Garden Heights Recovery in Jersey City teamed up with community leaders, addiction experts and mental health activists to offer a free panel discussion to local community members, clinicians and anyone interested in learning more about the opioid crisis. It’s no secret that rapidly growing cases of opioid addiction in New Jersey have had crippling effects on the state, including the economy and social welfare of all 8.9 million residents. The event was presented by Niznik Behavioral Health which founded Garden Heights Recovery (in 2016) and the panel of experts focused on what’s working and what isn’t.

New Jersey’s rate of heroin overdose is three times the national average and Jersey City is reportedly ranked in the top seven percent. Garden Heights Recovery is committed to finding better solutions in these communities facing crisis.

The event brought together strong voices for recovery including Robin F. James, the Mental Health Administrator for Hudson County. Another speaker, Stacey Flanagan, the Director of Health and Human Services for Jersey City discussed the true lack of resources for too many citizens and pointed to excellent partners like Garden Heights. Other speakers included Bill Lillis from the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey and William Perkins, CEO of Training Addiction Recovery Professionals.

Garden Heights is ramping up their activities this October. They’re offering new Fall recovery sessions designed to coach patients struggling with substance abuse this upcoming holiday season. The team at Garden Heights is also gathering with Alumni and their families to spread the word about staying sober this Halloween.

Our mission this October – and really all year long – is to play a very important role in addressing risk factors among individuals and within communities. Effective prevention programs should include family members and entire communities and should be a part of a long-term process that utilizes multiple interventions.

Together, this National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, let’s all be a force of change. Let’s examine our own drinking behaviors, make a personal goal, and raise awareness about the risks and dangers of substance abuse and addiction.

Garden Heights Recovery aims to make addiction treatment as convenient and accessible as possible. The facility even offers transportation assistance to group meetings and therapy sessions. Garden Heights specializes in outpatient care and trauma-informed programs that help clients deal with emotional trauma and mental health issues using intensive behavioral therapy.
